Summer Slipover

Designed to be knit in relatively thick bamboo, linen or silk blends, the summer slipover is the perfect transitional piece that will keep you cool and warm for those not quite summer days and evenings. The vest is knitted from the top down, the front and back are knitted flat, joined in the round at the underarm, then knit in the round until the desired length before the split hem.

PATTERN DETAILS

Sizes: A (B, C, D, E) (F, G, H, I)

32” (36”, 40”, 44”, 48”) (52”, 56”, 60”, 64”) / 83 cm (87 cm, 102 cm, 110 cm, 122 cm) (131 cm, 142 cm, 151 cm, 163 cm)

Choosing your size and fit:

The stated measurements are for the actual garment, choose a size with your desired ease, 0 to 2” / 0 - 5 cm positive ease is recommended.

Sample Information:

Yarn:

Sample knitted in Hobbii Rainbow Bamboo (250m / 100g) held double

Second sample knitted in Sandnes Garn Tykk Line (60m / 50g) held single

Note: To achieve the drapey look of the sample knit, choose a yarn made with silk or a plant based fibre for example silk, linen or cotton. Wool blends may work but are likely to give a different look to the final garment, and will be more of a traditional wooly slipover.

Yardage:

When held double:

300 (340, 380, 420, 450) (490, 530, 570, 600) grams

750 (850, 950, 1050, 1125) (1225, 1325, 1425, 1500) metres

Metres required per strand (use this if you plan to use a single strand of heavier yarn):

375 (425, 475, 525, 563) (613, 663, 713, 750) metres

Note: These yardages are for the recommended body length, if you make the top longer you will need additional yardage. If you use a yarn with different yardage per 100g make sure to purchase yarn based upon the total metres required per strand.

Needles: 5 mm & 5.5 mm circular needles and/or DPNs

Needle sizes are recommended, choose a size needed to achieve gauge.

Gauge: 16 stitches & 22 rows per 4” / 10 cm in stockinette after blocking on larger needles.

When using silk or plant based fibres it is REALLY important to block your swatch before measuring the gauge. You should also note your row gauge before and after blocking to make sure that you don’t end up with a much deeper armhole than desired. These fibres (especially cotton) also have the tendency to grow a lot over time with wear, so if you find you are between sizes or your gauge is slightly off consider this and choose a smaller size. If you are not able to achieve both stitch and row gauge, focus on stitch gauge, taking into consideration that any length measurements in the size chart will be affected. In addition, if you find that your flat and in the round gauge differ a lot, check both a flat and in the round gauge swatch.

Notions: 3 spare cables or waste yarn to hold the back and shoulders, optional stitch markers to help with placement of increases.

Difficulty: Confident Beginner. This pattern requires only basic knit, purl and simple increase stitches. However other construction techniques are required including casting on additional stitches and picking up stitches in a rib pattern. The top is knitted flat and in the round.

Deadline: 5th July 2023
